Dear friends,
I feel sad to see in-effectiveness of our govt, political parties and general public to prevent drugs, alcoholism and smoking. It is easy to get correct financial statistics about its sales and tax collection, But there is no proper statistic available about its ill effects on people & society.
When we ask for govt to "Ban All Drugs, Alcohol & Cigarettes"- Govt has a nice excuse- "It can not afford lose revenue of around 10,000 Crore" - Govt is right- They have proper record about it-but we, common people don't-
Let me give you few examples.
1. There are about 70 new cancer patients are getting admitted to RCC, Tvm, DAILY. 40-50% of such cases(~35 people) are due to usage smoking, hans, pan parag, betel etc. and average treatment expense of a cancer patient is around 10 lakh(1 Million) minimum. Lets find out total expense because of this.
ie 35 (patients) * 25 (working days) * 12 months * 10 lakh(avge total expense) = 10,500 Million Rs/Year or 1050 Crore Rupees/Year.
I am not sure about total number of such patients in other hospitals. In anyway the financial damage due to usage of cigarettes, hans, betel etc would be more than 5000 Crore/Year only in Kerala alone.
2. As per the study conducted in Keezhariyur Panchayath, Calicut on 2004 by my friend Mr Surendran and his social organisation, it is found that 75 full time drunkers( drinks daily), 35 weekly drunkers and 100+ once in a while drunkers in a Single Panchayath WARD. There are about 10 wards in that panchayath. All these people spend as an average 80 Rs/Day in 2004. It would be many times now a days. Lets find out total expense due to this.
75(Daily drinkers only) * 80 Rs/Day *30 Days *12 Months * 10 wards= 21600000 Rs or 2.16 Crore/Year/Panchayath. Total budget of panjayath is well below this amount. The average cost daily consumption of liquor is well above 300 Rs. now. There is no data available about current situation. Anyway we can assume that total financial cost would be around 8 Crore. If we taken account of all other 1000+ panchayaths and other local bodies in Kerala, this amount will much bigger than we ever thought. More over 90% such drinkers are average daily workers.
I am not discussing other side effects such as family issues, crimes, accidents, diseases etc. There are number of people dying directly and indirectly due to so called these devils - Drugs-Alcoholism-Smoking.
Still we, govt., political parties never bother. Govt just wanted tax at the expense of health and wealth of average citizens. No need to wonder why all of our five year plans are failing, failing, failing....
But I can't afford to say "Ban All Drugs, Alcohol & Cigarettes" -Anybody listening?
Regards
